Tips to Clean out Your Closet

The new year is always a perfect time to go through my home and declutter. In fact, this New Year’s Eve I spent the majority of the day reorganizing my desk, bookcase, and storage closet so I could start the year on a good foot. However, one place that I have yet to tackle is the closet, so I thought it would be fun to share my closet decluttering process so we can clean out our closets together! 

  1. Take out everything

And yes, I mean everything! This can always be difficult because this means you really have to go through every piece that you own, but I promise there’s a good reason. Going through each piece of clothing allows you to find those shirts or sweaters that you haven’t seen or worn in months. It also commits you to the process. There is no way to get it done half-way when everything is already out.

  1. Make three piles

A Keep, Donate and Throw Away pile. The hardest part of this process is deciding what to keep vs what to donate, but following these steps can make it a bit easier. First get rid of all the clothes that don’t fit anymore. We often hold onto old clothes that remind us of a time when we were younger, in better shape, or even happier in general. Maybe we do this because we hope to be able to fit in them again one day or because they remind us of a happier us. However, I have found that rather than motivating me, hanging on to these clothes have more negative effects on my present self-image. We are so often hard on ourselves and the last thing we need is our closet to join in! By getting rid of these clothes, we can say to ourselves ‘the past is the past, and I can start looking forward to my future.’ Then, keep the basics! That classic black tee or your favorite denim can work with anything, so keep it for another season. Finally, use the six month rule. If you haven’t touched or worn something in the last six months, donate it! If you haven’t worn it in the last six months chances are you will never end up wearing it. 

  1. Donate or Sell!

Once everything is separated, get rid of those old clothes! There are plenty of places that don’t require an appointment to sell or donate your clothes so you can quickly drop them off and get rid of that clutter. One place my husband and I love to go to in Salt Lake City is Uptown Cheapskate because you can drop off your clothes and they will buy or donate them for you! This is a great way to motivate you to get rid of those clothes because you can get some spending money for replacements or even just a nice date night!   1. Replace and Organize

Now it’s time for the fun part: organizing! This is when I really feel that cleaning out the closet was worth it. It is so nice to fold everything neatly and organize your closet the way you want. I tend to organize by color, but my husband likes to have everything organized by type of clothing so go with what makes you the happiest. At the end of this process I love to look back and see all that I accomplished. I find that this task can lead you to feel a lot better about yourself because you were able to finish a big project that day! And being able to look at this progress you made can motivate you for your next task. 

  1. Shop and Repeat

Refilling your closet is okay! Many cleaning/organizing videos or posts I see want you to keep your closet spotless and the same way it is right after re-organizing it, or they want you to adopt  a more minimalist wardrobe; but I say have fun refilling your closet! Find the pieces that make you feel more like you and buy them. There was a time in my life that I was overly focused on trends, but I felt more like a caricature of someone than myself when wearing those clothes. When you shop for the clothes that bring out your personality you feel more confident and feel more at home in your body. There is no shame in having a big closet, but just make sure you clean it out regularly. That way you can get more of the things you like to wear and less of the things you don’t.
